LOQUAT fits neatly into San Francisco’s vibrant bakery and café scene, carving out a space that’s less about flashy trends and more about thoughtfully crafted coffee and pastries. Located on Gough Street, its vibe is quietly confident—perfect for folks who value a solid cup of cappuccino paired with a cake or savory pastry that shows attention to detail without fuss.

Inside, the aesthetic draws you in with carefully curated ceramics and a cozy mix of plants, making it a steady spot for locals who like their coffee rituals accompanied by subtle design touches. This isn’t the kind of place you pop into just to grab a quick coffee and dash; it invites a slower experience, whether you’re meeting a friend, working quietly with a latte, or indulging in one of their standout sweet treats.

Speaking of treats, LOQUAT leans into a refined, somewhat adventurous pastry lineup. Their babkas—salted chocolate and poppyseed walnut—offer flaky, richly flavored alternatives to your standard cinnamon swirl. For those after something both fresh and bright, the preserved lemon and rosemary tart strikes a unique balance, layering herbal brightness with a citrus punch. The savory bourekas, especially the spinach and feta or mushroom options, blend buttery, flaky dough with fillings that feel thoughtfully seasoned rather than overly rich.

Because of its refined menu and carefully composed atmosphere, LOQUAT tends to attract a mix of people who appreciate quality without pretense: creatives stopping by for a morning coffee and pastry, couples chatting over cake in the afternoon, or anyone looking for a casual yet elevated spot away from the usual San Francisco café bustle. Prices lean to the higher side, so it’s less about everyday coffee runs and more about a midweek treat or weekend indulgence.

Morning and early afternoon visits offer the best light and laid-back energy, making it an inviting place to linger over an espresso macchiato or a slice of chocolate espresso cake while watching the neighborhood stroll by. Staff are approachable and attentive, which helps the experience feel less like a presentation and more like a quietly confident neighborhood staple.

I ordered an array of desserts. Each one better than the last. Highly recommend the rosemary lemon curd tart, pistachio butter cookie, and mahlab. We had ours to go but while there the staff was very friendly.

A charming bakery with a stunning selection of cakes, sweets, and savory items. The interior is uniquely designed and incredibly cute, with beautiful ceramics used for serving—every plate and cup feels thoughtfully chosen and adds to the experience. We opted for the mushroom boureka as a savory treat. The pastry was perfectly flaky and light, and the filling was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. That said, I couldn’t take my eyes off the rest of the baked goods and cakes—they all looked irresistible. We also had an espresso and a mint tea, which was served with fresh mint leaves—both refreshing and comforting. A lovely touch: drinks come with a piece of halva, offering the perfect bite of sweetness to enjoy alongside your beverage. If you're visiting San Francisco, this bakery is definitely worth a stop. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger, and everything from the food to the ambiance is crafted with care. Highly recommended!

Forget all the other bakeries this is number one in San Francisco. It lives under the hype, but it’s above the rest. No long lines or fancy croissants. Loquat is the real deal. The make some serious cakes. They are not messing around.

loved the details of the store and the food! the cutley cups and plates are so design-y and compliment well with the plants. the boureka sandwich and pastry were buttery and airy, perfectly sized too. definitely on the expensive end for a casual breakfast but the experience was good.

Wow…just wow. Several of my friends recommended that I try out Loquat when I moved to San Francisco, and I can absolutely see why — it fully lives up to the hype with its outstanding pastries, great coffee, and amazing vibes. The pastries, to quote a French friend, “rival the ones available in Paris,” although I’m not sure what she’s comparing them to given everything is Mediterranean inspired. For a savory treat, I adore their feta and eggplant boureka, which has a remarkably rich and flavorful filling encased in a buttery, flakey shell. It’s topped with a very generous helping of poppy seeds, so be prepared to have seeds in your teeth for the rest of the day, but it’s 100% worth it. They have tons of amazing sweet treats, ranging from croissants to cakes, but their classic is the salted chocolate babka muffin. It is literally to die for — the bread is perfectly flaky, with just the right amount of butter to make it rich but not overwhelming. The dark chocolate is wonderful and not overly sweet, but any sugar is balanced out by the salt. Genuinely the only thing wrong with this is that I can’t have it every single day. Beyond the classics, they also have a rotating set of seasonal items that are all wonderful. I overheard a server chatting with the table next to mine and describing a seasonal dish featuring a summer Italian hot pepper. She got the brunch version of the dish with full peppers, eggs, and bread, but they also have a pastry-fied version in the form of a boureka. Literally everything is outstanding, and I cannot wait to make my way back here!
